Badass Lady Gang Blowup 5K!

Join the Badass Lady Gang for the BALG Blowup 5K!

We all think we know what we’re capable of. Regardless of whether we’ve set out to find our pre-defined limits or avoid them at all costs, we all have this voice in the back of our heads that tells us what we are and aren’t capable of. It’s that voice that either screams,“NO MORE. I WILL DIE IF I KEEP GOING. STOP! AHHH!”, during races or speed work, or, “I DON’T KNOW HOW LONG I CAN HOLD THIS! KEEP FIGHTING! I AM BEYONCE! AHHHH!”

Sometimes we hear versions of both. Sometimes just one.

A few years ago, I was a guest on a badass podcast called “Real Talk Radio with Nicole Antoinette”. Nicole and I were talking about doubt, fear, and pushing our limits when said that she’d always wanted to intentionally blowup during a race. And not just go out too hard and stumble her way to the finish, cross the starting line with the intention to race and somewhere in the middle, when that voice screams, “PULL BACK! TOO SCARY! DANGER WILL ROBINSON!” push even harder and hold on for dear life. Push to the point where she has to double over and stop to catch her breath. LITERALLY BLOW UP during a race.

I fell in love with the idea immediately. A fear of failure has always held me back both in my running life and in my personal life. Too often, I won’t even try something because I’m afraid I’ll quit when the going gets tough or I’ll embarrass myself. And in running, I always pull back when the voice in the back of my head screams, “You can’t run this fast! PULL BACK!” instead of seeing what happens when I just try and give my personal best effort.

Ever since Nicole told me about her idea to blow up during a race, I’ve wanted to throw a blowup 5K. Because it doesn’t matter if you’re a brand new runner or someone looking for a way to become a stronger runner, the blowup 5K is a kick ass way to challenge what we think we’re capable of. In this race, the only way you can actually fail is if you finish.

It doesn’t matter how fast you are or how far you get, the only thing that matters is that you spend a few weeks showing up for yourself in your training and then on race day, ask yourself what you think your pre-defined limit is. Write it down. Then challenge yourself to give your personal best effort and see what happens. Blowup at .25 miles? AWESOME! Blow up at 2.4 miles? YOU GO GIRL! This race isn’t about finishing, it’s about going ALL OUT and seeing what happens when you give yourself permission to just GO and see what happens.

The only way you fail is if you fail to try. You in?
