BALG Running Plans Explained: Which Path Is Right for You?

Every week I get some version of the same message: "I want to start running but I don't know which plan to pick." And honestly? That question usually isn't about the plan at all. It's about not wanting to get it wrong — picking something too easy and feeling like a fraud, or picking something too hard and proving to yourself you "can't" do this. So let's fix that right now.

The Real Question Isn't "Which Plan Is Best." It's "Where Am I Actually Starting From?"

I built BALG's entire ecosystem around one idea: you should never have to pretend to be further along than you are to get help. There's no version of this where you "graduate" from being a beginner faster by picking the harder option. Training works the other way around — you get to the hard stuff by respecting where you're starting.

So before we talk price points or plan structure, answer this honestly: are you trying to start running for the first time, get back into it after time off, build a general fitness base, or train for a specific race with a date on the calendar? That answer — not your fitness level, not what your friend is doing, not what feels impressive — is what actually determines your starting point.

Why This Question Trips Up So Many Athletes

I think a lot of the confusion comes from how running content usually gets marketed: everything is positioned as "the best" or "the ultimate" plan, like there's one correct answer and everyone else is doing it wrong. That's not how training actually works, and it's definitely not how BALG works. We built five distinct paths — Free Training Experiences, The Studio, The Team, paid Training Experiences, and The Team with Coaching — because five distinct situations actually exist. A first-time runner and a woman training for her third marathon PR don't need the same thing, and pretending otherwise doesn't serve either of them.

The other thing I want to name directly: there is no shame tier here. Nobody in the Gang is "only" in Free Community, and nobody is "extra" for paying for Coaching. Every single path leads to the same place — a woman who shows up for herself consistently — they just take different routes to get there.

Start Here If You're New, Returning, or Just Not Sure Yet: Free Training Experiences

This is not a watered-down version of "the real thing." It's the actual on-ramp I built for exactly this moment, and it costs nothing, which matters because you shouldn't have to pay to find out if running is for you.

  • Become a Runner (8 weeks): for anyone brand new to running or coming back after a decade off. Run/walk intervals, twice-weekly strength, and a curriculum built around confidence first, pace second.

  • Get Back to Running (8 weeks): for runners returning after two to six months away. This one respects that your body remembers how to run — it just needs a smart, gradual path back, not a punishing one.

  • Back to Basics (8 weeks): for runners who are already running and want to get stronger — hill repeats, 200m reps, intervals, three mile time trials, long runs, and twice-weekly strength.

Each one comes with a real weekly structure, journaling prompts, and a community feed full of people at the exact same stage as you. There's no card on file, no trial period ending, no upsell lurking three weeks in. Start here if you're even a little unsure — you can always move up. You can't get this starting point back once you've skipped it.

Ready for Structure and Strength? The Studio or The Team

The Studio ($9.99/month) — When You Want Strength Without a Running Plan Yet

Not every runner is ready to commit to a structured running plan, and that's fine. The Studio gets you full access to our strength library — every level, from First Lift for total beginners to advanced power and speed work — with zero running plan attached. It's the right call if you're rebuilding after injury, cross-training between plans, or just want to get stronger before you add structured running on top.

The Team ($19.99/month) — Your Personalized Running Plan

This is the core of what we do, and it's the one most runners with a specific goal end up in. You get a Running Plan built around your actual race goal — 5K, 10K, half marathon, or marathon — at your actual level.

Here's the part people skip past too fast: The Team isn't one plan. When you set yours up, you answer a few questions — what you're training for, how many days a week you can run, and where your fitness is right now — and your plan is built from your answers. Two runners training for the same race can end up with very different weeks. There's no "correct" answer here — the correct one is the one that matches your actual life and injury history, not your ego on a Tuesday.

Every plan includes easy runs, workouts, long runs, and real rest days — not "optional" rest days, actual scheduled ones — plus two to three strength sessions a week pulled straight from the same library Studio members use. You also get The Team Q&A feed, where you post a question and a coach answers (you can't message a coach directly, but you can always post there), training journals to track how workouts actually felt (not just how fast they were), and a Coin Jar and Medals system that celebrates showing up, not just hitting a number.

If you're standing between two answers and can't decide — pick the more conservative one. You can always request an adjustment once you see how the first two weeks feel in your actual body. You cannot un-injure yourself by starting too aggressive.

Want to Understand the "Why," Not Just Follow the Plan? Training Experiences

This is the option people don't ask about enough, and it might honestly be the best fit for a lot of you. A Training Experience is a curriculum — you're not just following a plan, you're learning the reasoning behind every workout, with deeper journaling and a cohort of athletes who started on your exact same date.

  • Half Marathon (12 weeks, $150): a set start date, a cohort that starts the same week, coaching calls, and journals. It comes around in March, May, and November.

  • Fall Marathon (20 weeks, $250): our longest program. Long runs build up to 3 hours, and the journals are built for the mental side of those long days.

  • Fastest Way To Get Faster (8 weeks, $100): eight weeks to build speed and strength. It comes around in January and April.

  • Turkey Trot (8 weeks, $50): eight weeks of training for a turkey trot, with a cohort and coaching calls.

Think of it this way: The Team hands you the workout. A Training Experience also tells you why that workout exists, what it's building toward, and how to think through it when race day gets hard. If you're the kind of athlete who reads the "why" behind everything (you know who you are), start here instead.

Serious About a Big Goal? The Team with Coaching

At $89.99 a month (or $599.99 a year, which works out to about $50 a month), The Team with Coaching adds coach messaging and coaching calls on top of everything in The Team. This is the tier for athletes chasing something specific and significant — a sub-goal marathon time, a return from a complicated injury, 40-plus mile weeks — who want an actual expert in their corner between workouts, not just a plan on a screen.

The Objections I Hear Most — and Why They're Usually Wrong

"I don't have time for a whole plan."

Every plan in The Team is built around your actual schedule and race date, not some arbitrary ideal week. Most runs are time-based, not distance-based, because I care more about you getting out the door for the minutes you actually have than hitting a mileage number that ignores your real life. A plan with three runs a week is still a real plan.

"I don't want to fail at it."

This is the one that gets me every time, because it's usually the athletes most capable of finishing who say this. Here's the truth: choosing fewer days a week when you're actually ready for more isn't failing, and choosing more days than your body is ready for isn't succeeding faster — it's setting yourself up for an injury or a burnout that actually does end your training. The plan you pick is not a referendum on your worth as an athlete. It's a logistics decision, nothing more.

"I already did a free program, do I have to start over?"

Not even a little. Free Training Experiences exist to get you moving, not to make you repeat steps forever. If you finished Become a Runner and you're ready for a specific race goal, go straight to The Team and answer the setup questions honestly, based on how that free program actually felt — not on some sense that you "should" be further along by now.

So Which One Is Actually Right for You?

If you're still not sure after all that, here's the short version I'd tell you if you messaged me directly:

  • Brand new or coming back after time off? Start with a Free Training Experience. No exceptions, no shortcuts — this step is what makes everything after it sustainable.

  • Just want to get stronger, no race in mind? The Studio.

  • Have a race and a date? The Team — answer the setup questions honestly, not aspirationally.

  • Want to learn the reasoning, not just follow instructions? A Training Experience matching your race distance.

  • Chasing something big and want expert eyes on it? The Team with Coaching.

And if you're moving between tiers as your season changes — say, Studio during an off-season strength block, then The Team once you pick your next race, then a Training Experience for the specific distance you're chasing — that's not indecision. That's exactly how this ecosystem is designed to work. Nobody stays in one lane forever, and you're allowed to change your mind as your goals do.

None of these is a "lesser" choice. The Gang is full of women who started in Free Community and are still there by choice, right alongside women who upgraded to Coaching in month two because they knew exactly what they wanted. Both of those are winning. The only actual mistake is picking based on what looks impressive instead of what's true about your life right now.

Kelly Roberts

Head coach and creator of the Badass Lady Gang, Kelly Roberts’ pre-BALG fitness routine consisted mostly of struggling through the elliptical and trying to shrink her body. It wasn’t until hitting post-college life, poised with a theatre degree, student loans, and the onset of panic, that she found running. Running forced Kelly to ditch perfectionism and stomp out fear of failure. Viral selfies from the nyc half marathon struck a chord with women who could relate to the struggle, and soon the women’s running community Badass Lady Gang was born.

BALG is about enjoying life with a side of running. Kelly’s philosophy measures success by confidence gained, not pounds lost. If you aren’t having fun, it’s time to pivot. Kelly is an RRCA certified coach and has completed Dr. Stacy Sims ‘Women Are Not Small Men’ certification course helping coaches better serve their female athletes. Over the years Kelly has coached thousands of women from brand new runners to those chasing Boston marathon qualifying times, appeared on the cover of Women’s Running Magazine, joined Nike at the Women’s World Cup, and created a worldwide body image empowerment movement called the Sports Bra Squad. She lives in Brooklyn, New York.
